A letter from C.S. Harris, 1917

As JIM wrote in an earlier article, C.S. Harris was founder and 20-year editor of the Adair County News, from 1897-1917. Jim says, "Mr. Harris never met a cause beneficial to Adair County for which he didn't stand four-square in favor of. His first letter to The News, penned just weeks after he, Maggie, and the younger kids moved to Mississippi, ran nearly two full columns.

In the closing paragraphs, he poignantly spoke of his reasons for leaving Adair, saying" (in part):
"I have no complaint against the old home. I love its hills, its hollows, and best of all the people, but I was out of harmony with public sentiment and I felt it best for me, and, Adair as well, that I should no more agitate, aggravate and disturb the peace and quietude of so good a community. ...

"It is not my business to meddle in your affairs, but good will forces me to say that unless a change in public conditions in Adair county is forthcoming, that county will lose many who are needed there. ...

"For twenty years I preached this doctrine and for twenty years we lost our most progressive young men -- gone to build the West. ..."

"May The News prosper, may its supporters be blessed and may Adair county awaken to its great opportunities, and then I may wander back to the land I love but left." s/ Yours Truly, C.S. Harris.

Gas pump inspection stickers contain a new message

From Madison Pergrem

Frankfort, KY - As Kentucky Department of Agriculture's (KDA) motor fuel inspectors check the quantity and quality of fuel this year, they'll be adding a special message to gas pumps. This year's inspection stickers contain a message reminding drivers to not leave children or pets in an unattended hot car.

"The services we provide at the Kentucky Department of Agriculture are centered around the greater good for our consumers," Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell said. "From protecting against animal diseases that could disrupt our food supply to fighting against harmful policies affecting our farmers and farm families, KDA is consistently working to better our communities. Sending a message about protecting our children from suffering in a hot unattended car is just one more way we are providing that service. We are hopeful these stickers provide that reminder to be mindful of the lives in your car and how you can help protect them."

The message of not leaving children in a hot car is not a new one, but it is new for the gas pump inspection stickers created annually by KDA.

Carol Perkins: The Tiller

Previous Column: Carol Perkins: Circle the Square

By Carol Perkins

He's getting on my last nerve.

Have you heard that expression? It is an apt one for Guy Perkins, the retired Guy Perkins. He could say the same.

For the last month, Guy has been in a land of retirement. It is more like a foreign country. Since he got out of college, he has been on the road with his job. Gone two nights and three days a week. I didn't think about how long he was gone during that time because it was his job.

COVID took Guy off the road, and he started working from home. At least he was busy wheeling, dealing, and thinking about clients and how to make things happen. (He was in industrial sales.)

When he was contemplating retirement, I offered the pros and cons.

Getting to know the writers who read from their works

One of those who read from their works at the first Writers' Day event was Michael Watson, a native of Adair County, who spent twenty-seven years working with students at Anderson County High, teaching Advanced Placement U.S. History as well as various social studies classes, the last ten years operating the library media center.

An historian by training, he has worked many hours over the past forty+ years pursuing his true avocation--researching local history and genealogy, and has published several local history books and articles.

Phillip Wood Coffey: Not leaving

Pulled up a tree stump and there I soon sat
Viewing the lake front and much more than that,
No regard for the speed boats, then out I spat.
Passerby leading a wiener dog, but nary a cat.

Please let me be until the very late evening
Breeze flowing thru the leaves, birds chirping.
Nothing about with much speaking - deceiving
Carry on springtime soldiers, just decided, not leaving.

Kentucky Color: Great White Trillium

2024-04-28 - Great Wooded South - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge.
By Billy Joe Fudge
When Great white trillium stands green,
North winds hold back the Spring.
Warm days fade into cold nights
And frost in early morning bites.
But when three petals open white,
Like fairies dancing in moonlight
Filtered by clouds and forest crown;
Spring is lost and Summer's found!
